Bishop Everard de Jong
Bishop Everard de Jong is the auxiliary bishop of the diocese of Roermond. He grew up in Eindhoven, where he studied metalworking and then electronics at a technical school before entering the seminary Rolduc in Kerkrade. After working as a chaplain, he studied philosophy at the Pontifical University of Saint Thomas Aquinas, Angelicum, in Rome and then philosophy of science at The Catholic University of America in Washington, DC, where he wrote a doctoral thesis comparing Galileo Galilei's Logical treatises and Giacomo Zabarella's Opera logica. Returning to the Netherlands, he taught philosophy, served as diocesan responsible for youth pastoral care, and then as student chaplain for the students of Maastricht, among other responsibilities. He was appointed auxiliary bishop by Pope St. John Paul II in 1999.
